If you follow me on Instagram, then you saw me share these easy Air Fryer Garlic Plantain Fries in my stories.  Quite a few of you asked for the recipe, so here it is!

As many of you know, I have a slight obsession with plantains.

Also, I received an air fryer for my birthday back in August and have been absolutely LOVING it!  I use it to cook everything.  From chicken thighs to green beans, french fries to bagels.

So, I guess you could say I've combined two of my favorite things (plantains and my air fryer) to make this amazing recipe...which makes me one happy mama 🙂

Now, since this air fryer is still a new (to me) kitchen gadget, I don't have many air fryer recipes on the blog.  In fact, as of now, this is my only air fryer recipe!  But not to worry, I have plans to share many more.

These Whole30 french fries are made with ripe plantains, coated in a bit of oil and seasoned with salt and garlic powder.  After frying, the plantains are crisp on the outside and soft in the middle - absolute perfection.

Ingredients in Garlic Plantain Fries

Here's what you need to make these savory fried plantains:

  • 2 large, ripe plantains
  • avocado oil
  • pink salt
  • garlic powder
  • flaked salt (optional)

I used ripe plantains, meaning yellow with a few brown spots.  Green plantains and plantains that are extra ripe (nearly black) will cook differently...so just note that cooking time may change if you use those.

Instead of avocado oil, olive oil or melted coconut oil will also work.  I like avocado oil because it is heat stable at high temps and fairly tasteless.  But, olive oil and coconut oil are also great options.

How to Make Plantain Fries in the Air Fryer

First thing's first!  You must cut the plantains.

How do you cut a plantain you ask?? Well, it's really quite simple!

Peel & Cut Plantains

To cut a plantain for making fries, first cut off the ends of the plantain.  Depending on the size of the plantains (mine were huge) cut the plantains in halves or thirds.  (I cut mine in thirds.)

Next, slice the plantain skin from end to end.  Then use your hands to peel away the skin, revealing the flesh.

After removing the skin, cut the plantain in half (from end to end).  Cut each of those halves into thirds...making a french fry shape.

See photo below for reference.

Season Plantain Fries

After cutting the plantain, place the pieces in a large mixing bowl and drizzle with oil.  Coat, using tongs or your hands to stir the fries.

Sprinkle the salt and garlic powder onto the fries and mix again until well coated.

Lay the plantain fries out on your air fryer basket (as shown below) so that none of the fries are overlapping.

Optional: top the plantains with flaked sea salt.

Cook the Fries in the Air Fryer

Place the basket in the upper rack of your air fryer and fry at 350 degrees for 10 minutes.  (So, set the temperature to 350 degrees F and function to "air fry".)

After 10 minutes, take the fries out, flip and cook an additional 5 minutes at 350 degrees.

Cool slightly and eat!
