This paleo puppy chow (aka muddy buddies) is completely grain free, dairy free and far lower in sugar than your average puppy chow - but just as addictive! It's made with grain free cereal, coated in dark chocolate and almond butter and then dusted with powdered sugar.

Oh puppy chow... This legendary snack, well, it's more of a dessert, brings back so many childhood memories. While my parent's never made it, I had it multiple times throughout my childhood. It was always one of those desserts that I could never have just one serving of.
I mean, how can you resist a cereal dessert that's coated in peanut butter, chocolate and powdered sugar?! If that isn't a recipe for tastebud heaven, then I don't know what is.
I can't remember the last time I had "real" puppy chow. But, I recently created this paleo puppy chow recipe and WOW! Guys, this is even better than the conventional one.
My recipe uses grain free, paleo cereal and is coated in an almond butter and chocolate mixture. There isn't any peanut butter and I used powdered monk fruit for the powdered sugar. My version is much healthier, but just as tasty!
Why You'll Love this Puppy Chow Recipe
- paleo - made with simple, wholesome ingredients you can feel good about
- no peanut butter - made with almond butter
- lower in sugar - my recipe calls for less sugar since it uses dark chocolate and powdered monk fruit (instead of powdered sugar)
- easy to make - just a few simple steps to get a delicious dessert

Ingredients
The full recipe for this grain free puppy chow can be found in the recipe card below, but here's an overview of the ingredients you'll need:
- paleo cereal - I used Lovebird Honey O's
- dark chocolate - I used 85% dark chocolate chips
- coconut oil - thins the chocolate, making it easier to work with
- almond butter - just dry roasted almonds. You can swap the almond butter for any other nut or seed butter
- vanilla extract - for flavor
- powdered sugar - I used powdered monk fruit sweetener, but you can also make your own coconut powdered sugar or use regular powdered sugar if you aren't worried about the recipe being paleo.

How to Make Paleo Puppy Chow
To make this paleo puppy chow recipe, you'll need a small saucepan for melting the chocolate and coconut oil (or you can melt them in the microwave), a large mixing bowl and a large plastic baggie (or something similar). Here are the steps:

- Melt the dark chocolate and coconut oil. Then mix in the almond butter and vanilla.

- Pour the cereal in a large bowl, then pour the chocolate mixture over it.

- Mix until well coated. Place in the fridge and chill for 10-20 minutes.

- Scoop the cereal into a plastic baggie and add the powdered sugar. Shake the bag to coat.

Storage
These low carb muddy buddies can be kept at room temperature for 5-7 days. For longer storage, keep in the fridge or freezer. They are best stored in an air-tight container or baggie.

Paleo Puppy Chow Recipe (Grain Free, Dairy Free)
- Prep Time: 25 minutes
- Cook Time: 0 minutes
- Total Time: 25 minutes
- Yield: about 4 cups 1x
Description
Paleo puppy chow (aka muddy buddies) that's grain free and lower in sugar than your typical puppy chow recipe, but just as delicious!
Ingredients
- 4 cups paleo cereal*
- 5 oz dark chocolate chips (just under 1 cup)
- 1 Tbsp coconut oil
- ¼ cup unsweetened almond butter
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- ¼-½ cup powdered monk fruit**
Instructions
- Pour the cereal into a large mixing bowl. Set aside.
- Melt the chocolate and coconut oil in a small saucepan over low heat. Once the chocolate is fully melted, turn off the heat and mix in the almond butter and vanilla.
- Pour the chocolate-almond butter mixture over the cereal. Use a spatula or wooden spoon to mix the ingredients until the cereal is fully coated.
- Place the cereal in the fridge for 10-20 minutes. The chocolate should slightly harden, but not be rock solid***
- Remove the chocolate cereal from the fridge and pour it in a large baggie. Add the powdered sugar (just ¼ cup to start) and shake the bag, coating the cereal. If necessary, add more powdered sugar.
- Store in a sealed, airtight container or baggie.
Notes
*Any cereal will work, but I used Lovebird Honey O's. Use the code "bakeitpaleo" for a discount on any purchase
**The best low carb option is powdered monk fruit. Another paleo (not low carb) option is to make your own powdered sugar from coconut sugar and tapioca flour.
***This step is important if you don't want to add a ton of powdered sugar. As, letting the chocolate harden a little will make it so that the powdered sugar doesn't melt into the chocolate. Be sure to set your timer!
