My kids adore hot chocolate. Well, come to think of it, they like anything chocolate. Chocolate truffles, chocolate collagen cookies, chocolate tigernut waffles, Paleo chocolate cupcakes...the list goes on.
They must get it from their mother 😉
Anyway, after a snowy morning last month I tested a Paleo hot chocolate recipe and it was a complete hit. My boys now ask for this homemade hot cocoa almost every morning.
Although they don't get a mug every day, the ingredients are actually pretty great - meaning I don't feel bad serving them up this cacao hot chocolate recipe.
This dairy free cocoa recipe is made with wholesome, real food ingredients and is low in sugar. It contains plenty of healthy, brain boosting fats, plus antioxidants from the organic cacao powder.

- super easy to make

This easy Vegan hot chocolate recipe is great alongside breakfast, as a cozy afternoon snack or an after-dinner treat. Add some marshmallows or whipped cream on top for an extra special treat.
Paleo Hot Chocolate Recipe Ingredients
This rich hot chocolate recipe requires just 4 simple ingredients. Here's what you need:
- unsweetened almond milk
- coconut cream (cream from a can of full fat coconut milk)
- maple syrup (or liquid sweetener)
- cacao powder (or cocoa powder)
In addition, you can include add-ins like vanilla extract, peppermint flavoring or cinnamon.
How to Make Paleo Hot Chocolate
I like to make this recipe on the stove top. It doesn't take long to heat up and I prefer this method to the microwave. However, the microwave will work.
First, combine the almond milk, coconut cream and maple syrup in a small sauce pan. Place the pan on the stove top and turn the heat to medium. Cook the mixture on medium heat, stirring every so often, until it starts to simmer.
Then, blend in the cacao powder. Tip: use a milk frother to blend in the cacao powder.
Pour the hot chocolate into a mug (or two miniature kids mugs) and drink! You may also top your hot chocolate with anything from whipped cream to marshmallows for an extra treat.

I have made a lot of paleo hot cacao recipes over the years. I use bone broth powder from PaleoValley which is the best cleanest collagen I can find, but I can taste it in everything but hot cacao. So I’ve been experimenting for years This beautifully simple recipe with the bone broth powder is absolutely the best ever.

Thank you for your kind review Emily 🙂 I love Paleovalley's bone broth protein too! So glad you enjoyed it in this recipe.
